GCSE Design and Technology – Resistant Materials

GCSE DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY – RESISTANT MATERIALS

This GCSE has been designed to encourage you to be able to design and make products with creativity and originality, using a range of materials and techniques. You will be enthused and challenged by the range of practical activities possible. A working knowledge of woods, metals, plastics and composite materials will be required, but other materials may be used in addition. The use of new technologies is encouraged in this course.

The course is also designed to foster your awareness of the need to consider sustainability and environmental impact of your design work.

The course breaks down into two units, a written exam and a major ‘design and make’ assignment.

The weightings for both components of the course are as follows:

Exam board: AQA

Unit 1: Written Paper (45601)

2 hours –120 marks – 40%

Candidates answer all questions in two sections.

Pre-release material is issued.

Unit 2: Design and Making Practice (45602)

Approximately 45 hours – 90 marks – 60%

Consists of a single design and make activity selected from a range of examination board set tasks.
