GCSE CATERING

The exam board is WJEC (Welsh Board)

Food is the creative application of knowledge, skills and understanding to design and make good quality products. Food is a global issue, of everyday importance to people and a necessity in life.  We are all consumers, users and makers of food

Catering is very much a skill based course and covers a lot of the life skills you will need to use when you leave school.  It also gives you a head start if you are thinking of a career in the catering industry and is good fun if you simply enjoy cooking.

The Catering industry is a major employer and offers a fulfilling career. If you have an interest in and genuine passion for food and want to be part of an exciting, dynamic and growing industry then this could be the course for you!

It is a subject with a great variety of content including both independent and team working, problem solving, costing and planning. The course covers elements of food science, use of commodities, nutrition and actively encourages you to explore the diversity of foods available and their application in creating a variety of recipes.

In general there are three lessons a week, a double which is allocated to practical skills and a single when theory work is covered.

The two controlled assessments encourage you to taste, compare, contrast, design and test food products in a variety of ways that lead to a detailed investigation.
